Busy Final Week of 2011 December 31, 2011

Liberty Corner Fire Company was busy during the final week of 2011 with fires, mutual aid requests, and a funeral detail.

On Monday, December 26, Liberty Corner firefighters were called to 2501 Privet Way in the Cedars for a dryer fire. The fire was quickly controlled prior to damage extending to the building. Firefighters removed smoke from the apartment and were back in service shortly thereafter.

On Wednesday, December 28, Liberty Corner Fire Company attended funeral services for Robert F. Hill, a firefighter and past-Chief of the Peapack-Gladstone Fire Company. Liberty Corner and Far Hills-Bedminster Fire Companies each provided their aerial ladder trucks to display the American flag over the route from the funeral home to the church in honor of Chief Hill.

Later that same day, Liberty Corner Fire Company was called at the request of Far Hills-Bedminster Fire Department to help provide a landing zone for a Medevac helicopter at the Far Hills Fairgrounds. A seriously injured patient from an automobile accident on Lamington Rd. was flown to a local trauma center.

On Thursday, December 29, Liberty Corner Fire and EMS responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Martinsville Rd. and Allen Rd. Firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools to extricate one patient suffering chest pains. He was transported to Morristown Medical Center by Liberty Corner EMS.

Later that evening, Liberty Corner and Warren Township firefighters provided station coverage for the Stirling Fire Company while they operated with Millington, Berkeley Heights and Lyons Fire units at a residential fire on Jersey Avenue, Gillette.

Bringing a busy week and a busy year to an end, Liberty Corner Fire Company responded to a fire in a second floor apartment at 6201 Fellowship Rd. on December 31. Although the fire was controlled by the sprinkler system, firefighters checked for any extension and assisted with water damage control in the first floor apartment directly below the fire apartment. Two patients, a resident and an employee of Fellowship Village, were transported to Morristown Medical Center by Liberty Corner EMS.

Liberty Corner Fire Company ended the busiest year in its 101 year history with 441 runs, a 26% increase over 2010, and 33 more than the 408 recorded during its previous busiest year, 2000.

Building Collapse - Lyons Place November 25, 2011

A small out-building used to shelter animals on Lyons Place collapsed Friday, November 25, injuring a worker on the site.

Upon arrival, Liberty Corner Fire Company assisted Liberty Corner First Aid Squad EMTs and Atlantic Health paramedics with stabilizing a patient with a femur fracture and other injuries. Once packaged, the patient was carried by firefighters to an ambulance for transport to Morristown Medical Center.

Liberty Corner Extrication November 10, 2011

Late in the afternoon on Thursday, November 10, the Liberty Corner Fire Company was dispatched to a traffic crash at the intersection of Lyons Road and Quincy Road. Upon arrival at the scene, 1st Assistant Chief Marc Friedman established command and advised responding Rescue 1 (40-151) that there was a heavy entrapment.

After assessment by the Liberty Corner First Aid Squad and MICU, a Northstar medevac helicopter was dispatched, with Station 40 (Liberty Corner Fire Company) as the landing zone. The Far Hills-Bedminster Fire Department was dispatched to cover the landing zone, and the Basking Ridge Fire Co., No.1 was dispatched to the crash site for potential fire suppression. When it was determined that there was no student activity at William Annin Middle School, the landing zone was changed to that location, just a few blocks from the crash scene. Basking Ridge was diverted to cover the landing zone and Far Hills-Bedminster diverted to the scene.

The extrication was directed by 2nd Assistant Chief Joe Friedman, and accomplished by Firefighters Scott Kessel and Jerry Modugno. After the extrication was completed, the patient was packaged and transported to the landing zone and flown to Morristown Memorial Hospital. His condition is unknown.

Liberty Corner Extrication on I-78 November 7, 2011

On Monday morning, November 7, at 6am, the Liberty Corner Fire Company was dispatched to Interstate 78 Eastbound, at mile marker 30, for an automobile which had rear-ended a tractor-trailer, entrapping the driver, who was the sole occupant. Responding were Rescue 40-151, and Engine 40-104. Incident Commander was Chief Pete Aprahamian.

Upon arrival, it was determined that the driver was entrapped, and the tractor-trailer had left the scene. Extrication was performed by Firefighters Eric Murphy and Mike LaCosta, removing the driver's door and part of the roof. Miraculously, it appeared the driver had minimal injuries. He was transported BLS, by the Liberty Corner First Aid Squad.

Early Snowstorm Resulsts in Busy Day for Liberty Corner Fire Company October 29, 2011

Liberty Corner Fire Company volunteers responded to nearly two dozen calls from Saturday afternoon, October 29, into Sunday afternoon, October 30. With heavy snow falling, many trees and power lines fell as well, creating hazards from downed wires, blocked roads and other hazards.

While Monday, October 30 was quiet, Liberty Corner Fire was again rather busy on Tuesday, Novemeber 1, responding to seven calls, including coverage for Station 29 (Far Hills-Bedminster Fire Dept.) while they operated at a fire in Peapack.

After a record-breaking 51 calls in August of this year, Liberty Corner firefighters responded to 56 calls in October, 2011.

Irene Keeps Liberty Corner Firefighters Busy August 29, 2011

Liberty Corner firefighters were kept busy on Sunday, August 28, with the passage of Hurricane (downgraded to Tropical Storm) Irene. From 1:15 a.m. until 6:15 p.m., Liberty Corner Fire Company responded to sixteen calls. In addition to downed wires, fire alarms, water and other utility emergencies, Liberty Corner Fire Company also responded with Basking Ridge Fire Company to a house fire at 45 Woodstone Road at 5:51 a.m. The fire was quickly brought under control with damage to the basement and first floor.

To prevent delayed response to calls, many members of the fire company chose to sleep at the firehouse on Church St. As volunteers, firefighters normally respond to the firehouse from their homes and businesses, however with roads flooded and blocked by downed trees and power lines, there was great potential for delays and unsafe driving conditions. On several occassions, fire apparatus were forced to detour or to stop and remove trees and limbs from roadways.

Although the last three days of August were significantly quieter, fire calls on those three days resulted in Liberty Corner Fire Company responding to a total of fifty calls for the month of August.

F.A.S.T. Response to 343 Elm St., Stirling July 31, 2011

Liberty Corner Fire Company was requested for a Firefighter Assistance and Search Team (F.A.S.T.) to 343 Elm St., Stirling at 11:00 p.m. Sunday, July 31. A F.A.S.T. is generally called for any working fire in a building. In the eventa firefighter goes down or becomes trapped, the F.A.S.T. is deployed for rescue operations.

Long Hill Township Fire units (Millington and Stirling Fire Companies) were dispatched to a working fire in a two-and-a-half story private residence. First arriving companies reported heavy fire from all windows. Exterior attack was initiated and additional fire units were requested from Berkeley Heights, Chatham Township, Lyons VA, and Basking Ridge. Warren Township units were also deployed to Long Hill firehouses. In addition, Long Hill EMS and the Red Cross provided EMS and rehabilitation services.

After a prolonged firefight, partially as a result of inaccessibility of a ladder truck due to large trees in front of the residence, the fire was declared under control at approximately 4:30am.

The structure sustained heavy fire damage; the contents were a total loss.

Structure Fire at 22 Elizabeth St. July 29, 2011

Liberty Corner Fire Company responded to 22 Elizabeth St. at 3:00 p.m., Friday, July 29 for a report of smoke issuing from a residence. First Assistant Chief Marc Friedman arrived and confirmed smoke showing from a one-and-a-half story private dwelling undergoing renovation. Shortly thereafter, Engine 4 arrived, its crew entering the home and quickly reporting a working fire.

An 1¾ hose line was deployed and fire in the attic was extinguished after pulling the sheet rock ceiling down. Additional areas of fire were located and extinguished.

The residence sustained some smoke and water damage, and fire damage was limited to the attic. Due to the state of renovations, further damage to personal property and home furnishings was minimal.

In addition to an engine and ladder from Liberty Corner, Stirling Fire Company provided FAST (Firefighter Assistance and Search Team), Lyons VA Medical Center Fire Department provided an engine, and Liberty Corner and Basking Ridge First Aid Squads provided Emergency Medical Services and firefighter rehabilition services.

Who We are

Comprised of 45 volunteers, the Liberty Corner Fire Company is responsible for providing fire and rescue service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to the Liberty Corner section of Bernards Township. In fact, we have been providing volunteer fire and rescue service to the Liberty Corner community since 1910.

As you may know, Bernards Township is divided into two main sections - Liberty Corner (in the southern portion of the Township) and Basking Ridge (in the northern portion of the Township). Within the Liberty Corner section of the Bernards, our fire and rescue service area is comprised of approximately 16 square miles (of the 26 square miles in Bernards Township) and over 6,500 residences and businesses. Therefore, if you live or work in the southern portion of Bernards Township, it is the Liberty Corner Fire Company that provides you with fire and rescue services.

In addition to protecting our community, the volunteers of the Liberty Corner Fire Company are responsible for raising the majority of the funds used to satisfy the fire company's annual operating budget. Our volunteers work hard during the year to raise these necessary funds through our Annual Fund Drive mailing, our holiday gift delivery and the other fund raising
events we host each year. It is through the success of these fund raising efforts that we are able to provide the community with new and improved fire fighting and rescue equipment and our volunteer firefighters with the latest training in fire fighting and rescue techniques.
Please feel free to stop by and visit us at the Liberty Corner firehouse located at 95 Church Street (just west of the Liberty Corner school). Members can often be found at the firehouse on Monday nights (for training exercises) or late Sunday mornings (performing routine and preventive maintenance to the equipment). Additionally, please join us when we host our various events throughout the year such as our Memorial Day parade, our Fire Prevention Day and our Holiday parade to name a few. These events provide a fun and exciting way for you to visit the firehouse and meet the volunteers dedicated to protecting you, your family and our community.

We hope that you never need our services; however, if you do, rest assured that we will be there for you.
